HEALTH LINK BUS

Kerry Cancer Support Group was established in 2007 and has been transporting the people of Kerry and West Cork to hospitals in Cork for their cancer treatment since 2010. In the past year they have started a similar service to Limerick looking after North Kerry and West Limerick. Their motto is that “No one should face their cancer journey alone” and having covered up to 20,000 appointments in the past nine years they are certainly living up to
that. They also provide information and support to families experiencing cancer and to schools and groups in the region with their different campaigns. Their centre at Maine Street in Tralee is very welcoming and people are always encouraged to drop in to discuss anything relating to their journey.

Kerry Cancer Support Trust Services Health link Transport - Our signature service is a 30 Seater bus which travels to hospitals in Cork 5 days a week bringing our service users for treatment free of charge. We have a dedicated time slot at CUH for our users to minimise delays. This bus serves Kerry and parts of West Cork and we guarantee complete confidentiality. The service is a vital one and has been likened, by users, to a “travelling support group”. We also have a similar service travelling to Limerick on a daily basis. This is a new service but is already a busy one. We have the same arrangement in place with UHL as we do in Cork.

Bridging Transport Service – This service provides transport to treatment for service users on one off basis where no other service meets their needs. Information/Education service – We deliver a “Reduce your Risk” programme to schools and Community groups in the region. This service provides information on cancer and ways to reduce the risk, knowing your body, looking out for changes, acting on those changes and a healthy lifestyle.

Our Centre – We have developed a support and information room where past service users can come and speak to new service users about their experiences and give support and encouragement (a peer companion programme). We also have the facility to watch information DVDs and a range of information booklets etc to hand.

Future Plans

Kerry Cancer Support Group is always looking into improving its service and keeping up with the needs of its service users. With this in mind and with cancer incidence growing we are in the planning phase of setting up a Support Group in the West Kerry area based in Dingle. We plan to utilise resources in the region and deliver services in both English and Irish
